Questions and Answers

  1. What mediums do you work in and why? I enjoy the challenge of working with watercolor; it is a live medium to which one must act and react spontaneously.

  2. When, where and how did you start as an artist? I began painting and "making things" at a very early age; I have always been an artist - it is not a profession, it is who I am.

  3. How has your work progressed? My work has progressed from abstract, to realism, to expressionism, and will most likely go back to abstract again.

  4. How has your state or area influenced your work? The openness and "big sky" of New Mexico has a definite emotional impact on my work. That feeling of freedom is very important in every aspect of my creative process. I also enjoy the tri-cultural aspects of New Mexico; people and their cultural surroundings are what I am most interested in portraying.

  5. Are there any mentors or fellow artists that have had a significant impact on your work? On a first hand basis, Doug Walton has been my most influential instructor - more in the realm of bringing out the real being in me - giving me permission to be who I am and who I want to be. On a grander scale in the artistic world, Picasso has taught me to be certain of my direction and comfortable in the knowledge that diversity is my style.

  6. What creative inspirations have motivated you to pursue a particular technique or style? I am searching for the "life" of a subject; for the difference; for the music that is there.

  7. What do you enjoy most about creating your art? The freedom of going into another realm where there are no rules, no boundaries, just that oneness of being in process with the creation.

  8. What would you say to a potential client that could help them better understand you and your work? I would like the viewer to become such a part of my work that he is filled with questions, not answers; that he must interpret for himself what is there and that he will find something there that is his alone - a journey of discovery. The most often asked question of my work is "Why is there are no face?" .... there is a Chinese saying that goes, "It is the sides of the bowl that shape the vessel, but it is what is not there that gives it meaning." When I work intuitively, the figures come to me without faces - it would be trite to add a face for face's sake. There is a more universality about these figures in their body language than if they became 'one' person with 'one' face; after all we each wear so many faces - which would be meaningful for today?

  9. Do you have any anecdotes or stories that may had impacted your work? At the Summer Palace in China, a very old man looked over my shoulder for a short while as I put randomity onto the page. He immediately said, "Ah! I see! You put the confusion in first!" By way of helping me understand my own work, I believe that this is a most precise understanding of the philosophy behind it. First comes confusion, then calm. Life is confusion; we must live one day at a time to bring about order; it is process. Each painting, each drawing, each creative work is a process of living, and living is a process of art. I see art in everything I do.
